Notes From the Vet

Puppy Problems (Cont.)

Barking and crying are signs that your pet is lonely. When you leave your house, do not make it a big issue. Again, make sure that your puppy has his/her favorite toys to keep them happy while you are away. For the first few times, come back in one-minute intervals so that your puppy will know you are returning. Upon returning home, do not make a big deal of it or let your puppy jump and whine. Encourage him to bring you a chew toy for play, then lavish a reward. If your puppy jumps, it is sign that he/she wants to be close to you, but this should not be allowed. Act stiff like a tree and give the command "SIT," which should be taught at an early age. When puppy sits properly, reward him! Begging is a bad habit. There are several proven ways to assist you in breaking this bad habit: 1, Have your puppy eat his meals before you eat your dinner. 2, Place your puppy in another room while you are eating your meal so that he will not be giving you those sad puppy eyes! 3, Don't give your puppy food from the table. In that way he will not expect any treats. When breaking bad habits, the most important thing to remember is that praise will help in these methods. We advise a consultation with an animal behaviorist-trainer for serious behavior problems. Ask your vet to recommend one!
