Notes From the Vet

Fat Or Fit

Fat pets are not fit pets. Obesity leads to health problems. Without enough exercise and with too rich a diet, animals gain weight. Fat pets place more strain on their ligaments and joints. Obese pets have less exercise tolerance and will fatigue. Their heart strains to work hard carrying the extra load. Fat cats are slower and spend more time eating than normal cats. Fat cats can't even groom themselves properly. When fat cats get sick and quit eating, they may develop a liver problem known as "hepatic lipdosis" (fatty liver), which can be fatal. If you don't know your pets exact weight, find out today! Use your bathroom scale, with pet in arms, then subtract you weight. Use the walk-on scale for big dogs at your vet hospital. The one-inch "pinch-test" helps assess obesity. If your fingers are greater than one inch apart when you pinch your pet, he is obese. Unexplained weight loss is a common sign of illness or cancer in animals. Any change in weight is good reason for an exam. Ask your vet!! Copyright © 1998-2002 Fenix Research Group, Inc.
