Notes From the Vet

Eye Problems

Pure breed dogs inherit certain eye problems due to in-line breeding, but mix breeds are also effected. Wrinkled breeds, such as the Shar Pei, have problems with their eyelids. The upper and lower eyelids tend to roll inward (entropion). The eyelids scratch the cornea (surface of the eyeball) causing irritation and tearing. Collies, poodles and spaniels may inherit an insidious, incurable disease of the retina (the inner-most seeing part of the eyeball). The retina dies over a few years, blinding the dog. Cockers may develop "cherry eye" which is a swelling of the third eyelid. Boxers may get hard-to-heal corneal ulcers. Shepherds and pugs are troubled by a black pigment which grows over their corneas. Any breed can get cataracts which is a blinding degeneration of the lens making the pupil of the eye look white. Any dog can develop glaucoma which is a painful, enlargement of the eyeball. Eye injuries are a concern to all pet owners. If your pet ever shows squinting, blinking, tearing, redness, unequal pupil size or foggy corneas, see your vet ASAP!
